Sash windows are perhaps the most common type of window found here in and around Berkshire, Hampshire & Surrey. First introduced in the late 17th century, they remained popular across the Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian eras, as such they can be found in many different styles of home right across the country.
Perhaps the most notable feature of Sash Windows is how they open and close. They feature two panes of glass positioned in vertical grooves that slide up and down; one in front and one behind. This motion is made easy by the use of a simple yet highly effective counterweight mechanism. Traditionally made from lead, counterweights found in modern windows now feature durable, energy efficient springs that enable the windows to be opened and closed incredibly easily.
The grid style design of Sash Windows makes them instantly recognisable. Consisting of a grid of small glass panes held together by bars, the number of panes is often varied and therefore ensures your choice of window is unique. ‘Six over six’ and ‘eight over eight’ patterns are associated with Georgian-style homes, while a ‘two over two’ pattern is more common in Victorian era houses.
