What’s the standard external front door size?
Rather than there being a standard door size in the UK, homeowners and door manufacturers employ different sizes.
Commonly in England and Wales, the standard door width is 2’6” (30 inches or 762mm), but Scotland’s doors are conventionally narrower and roughly measure 28.5 inches (726mm).
When querying what is a ‘standard’ door with any installer, each installer you approach may reply with a contrasting answer, as what they deem as ‘standard’ depends on the products they supply and how they go about fitting them. TradeMark can handle installations involving non-standard door openings, as we tailor all our designs.
UK Homes And Their Standard Internal Door Sizes
In 2025, standard internal door sizes in the UK remain measured in both metric and imperial units. An example would be a door at an older building classed as “2 ft 6”, which is exactly the same 762 mm in metric measurements.
Imperial sizes like 2’3”, 2’6” and 2’9” are widely used in England and Wales, but Scotland prefers to do things in metric units, particularly when its 2040 mm tall doors are specified at newer abodes.
We’ve created a table listing common standard door sizes, detailing height and width in metric and imperial measurements.

Standard External Front & Back Door Sizes
Standard sizes vary very little when we’re talking about UK front and back doors, as they’re pretty consistent. 1981 mm is the normal starting height for common external door dimensions, with widths in the region of 610 mm to 926 mm.
Sizes in this ballpark will largely complement traditional door openings, making for uncomplex replacement door projects.
Scotland’s 2040 mm tall series is addressed in the below table, regularly chosen for many of the country’s new-build properties, establishing a modern and lofty feel. Use it to find out where each size is typically deployed.

Common Door Materials And Standard Door Sizes
A big influence on height, width and slab thickness is the selected door material.
The average timber door measures around 44 mm to 56 mm, compared to the composite door, which is an average of about 44 mm to 70 mm. UPVC door slabs have a slimmer composition than both.
The three materials offer differing looks, as well as contrasting standards of insulation and security. Our table below will explain this in simple terms, providing a careful breakdown of common door sizes and materials.
