Flush Casement Windows Vs. Non-Flush Windows: Which Is Right For Your Home?

A comparison between flush casement and casement windows

If you are considering replacing your windows, it’s important to know the difference between two of our most popular window styles: flush casements and non-flush casements.

The ‘flush’ feature is what separates these two window styles. A flush casement window gets its name from the window sash sitting flush with the frame, creating a level surface.

Our standard casement windows are referred to as ‘non-flush’ or ‘lipped’ because the sashes slightly overlap the window frame.

Both window styles can be found in our Woodley showroom where you can speak to our advisors about the variations in design, and following the Tips for Making Your Window Replacement Project a Success is a must !

When did flush and non-flush casements become prevalent in the UK?

Flush casement windows can be traced back to the 19th century, over 200 years ago. They were originally made from timber, as that was the preferred material for windows at the time.

This explains why a large percentage of houses built in the late Georgian, Edwardian, and Victorian times have flush windows made from timber.

Going back even further to the 18th century, non-flush casements were extremely popular. They were originally made by blacksmiths from iron, until timber took over as the sole material for windows. In modern times, aluminium and UPVC are the preferred material for non-flush casements.

What is behind the revival of flush windows?

It is partly down to window installation companies, like ours, who have marketed flush windows as the perfect window solution for homeowners who are looking to create a certain aesthetic.

Our modern interpretation of the traditional timber flush window, Envisage flush windows, are made from UPVC. Therefore, they benefit from enhanced insulation, built-in security features and low-maintenance care, while still upholding the classic look.

Should I choose Envisage flush windows or casement windows for my property type?

Flush casements are often the favoured windows to replace windows in heritage homes and those within conservation areas because they mimic the authentic styling of the 19th century.

However, thanks to the adaptable design of our UPVC flush windows, they appear to look just as home on a modern home as they would on a rustic home.

Similarly, a casement window would complement every style of home, so it really is up to personal preference.
